My Favorite Margarita Recipe

Each night my wife and I cook up a tasty meal, maybe something from the grill, some fresh pasta or homemade pizza. While my wife enjoys a glass of wine I prefer a cold margarita. This margarita recipe was developed over the course of about one year, first I narrowed down the type of tequila I like (silver platinum “Don Felipe” is quite good if your comfortable with spending about $40 on a bottle of booze. My second favorite tequila is “Milagro” silver, I would say it is probably the best tasting “silver” tequila at the $30 price point.

However the biggest impact on making tasty margarita’s is derived from the type of “mix” you use. Most “off the shelf” type mixes are not only expensive but taste terrible. Instead I use Paul Newmans Lemonade - it offers a great blend of sour and sweet and is made from real lemon juice.

Lastly is the type of orange liquor, I recommend using the French “Cointreau” it has a nice mellow orange flavor that is not too sweet or strong compared to that of “Grand Marnier” which in my mind can easily over power at margarita.

How do you mix up yours?

Great video and recipe too. My question involves the lime. I have never seen a margarita without a lime wedge. We love our margaritas but sometimes we shoot straight tequila. The only one we shoot is Herradura Anejo. It feels like a nice warm hug going down.

One time we did shots out on the deck with a bunch of friends over and my 79 year old Mom. She did shots like everyone else and loved them. She was up visiting us from Florida so the next morning I saw her in the kitchen making her coffee. She asked me if she had done any shots last night. I said yes, Mom, you did 2 or 3 like everyone else. She replied that she didn’t remember and would have to do them again tonight!! Mom is awesome!

Ah tequila shots with mom… LOL

A classic margarita will always have lime, however this lemonade is really tasty and the margarita’s taste just fine without. Why does this recipe not call for lime? Simplicity, sometimes it is hard to find citrus that is sweet enough to craft the perfect mixed drink so the lemonade works real well in this instance. However, I sometimes add a bit of lime (key limes are tasty are the Mexican variety) to the recipe featured above.
